1. NOURISH
Good nutrition is vital for healthy, glowing skin. Eat nourishing
meals that are low in fat and high in fiber. I try to eat grilled
fish (no sauce) and steamed vegetables at least 5 times each week,
and begin my day with oatmeal with skim milk and either blueberries
or raisins. For lunch I usually have melon and low-fat cottage cheese
or non-fat yogurt; sometimes I’ll have a turkey burger (without
the bread) and steamed spinach. I do treat myself to pasta with
a light sauce once a week because we all need a break once in a
while!
2.
HYDRATE
Drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day-even more if
you exercise strenuously and regularly. Since drinking water can
be boring, sometimes I spice it up with a spritz of lemon or lime
or cucumber for a refreshing alternative. Water is very important
for muscle tone.
3.
EXERCISE
Exercise is vital to your overall health, including healthy skin.
Choose an activity you enjoy and do it at least 20 minutes, four
times each week. My favorite exercise routine is Pilates, which
I’ve been doing for 6 years. A number of videos are available,
such as the Winsor Pilates® routine from Guthy-Renker, and all
you need is a simple mat. Try exercises that are non-impact and
help with strength, toning and endurance; I recommend that you do
some stretching exercises before even getting out of bed in the
morning. If you are too busy for regular workouts, as we all are
sometimes, try taking the stairs instead of the elevator and park
on the far side of the parking lot.
4.
PROTECT
Always wear sun protection all over your body with at least SPF
15. Reapply sunscreen throughout the day if you spend lots of time
outside. When I’m outdoors at the beach, I wear a good wide-brimmed
sun hat and sunglasses and my make-up also has sunscreen in it.
5.
RELAX
Stress can cause you to frown and scowl, which can eventually lead
to facial lines and creases. It also can weaken your immune system.
Take a deep breath, slow down and relax. When I’m particularly
overwhelmed I take a 5-minute time-out. I sit down, close my eyes
and take deep breathes which puts me into a calmer state. I highly
recommend going outside for a few minutes and taking some deep breaths
of fresh air a few times a day. This is especially important for
me because my workdays start so early and often end late. I have
also cut way back on caffeine, drinking only 1 and occasionally
2 cups of coffee a day and no soft drinks. Try substituting a cup
of hot water with lemon to reduce your coffee intake; add honey
if you want something sweet.
6.
RENEW
Rejuvenate and revitalize your skin with Youthful Essence®.
It’s like getting a spa treatment at home – without
the hassle or expense. You’ll immediately feel softer, renewed
and refreshed. Even when I’m on the road, I try to use my
Youthful Essence® products at least 2 – 4 times a weeks.
